Recycling Hyundai batteries: Right here in Quebec!

Electric vehicles are becoming exponentially more popular, and many manufacturers are getting in on the action by introducing a number of new electric and hybrid vehicles and models. But it's important to look beyond current trends, and Hyundai Canada is leading the way in that department, by partnering with a Quebec-based recycling company called Recyclage Lithion. Through this partnership, Hyundai will be able to recycle and recover battery components in a manner that is as eco-friendly and sustainable as its vehicles are.

Hyundai Lanaudière in Joliette, located near Repentigny, Mascouche and Terrebonne, is the first to offer this exciting new development that’s sure to make a huge difference in how batteries are recycled. Your dealership in Joliette has a large inventory of Hyundai hybrid models, plus the Hyundai IONIQ line of cars and an assorted range of electric cars.

Hyundai delivers on durability.

Creating electric and hybrid cars is simply not enough to ensure a greener, more sustainable tomorrow. We also have to consider how to deal with batteries at the end of their shelf life. That’s why Recyclage Lithion, the Quebec-based company specializing in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries, is tackling this problem firsthand, as reflected in its name.

Using a hydrometallurgical process, the company's main objective is to eliminate polluting emissions and reduce the need for further mining excavations. In fact, by recycling existing battery components, the strain on mining activities is significantly reduced: just another step towards a much needed ecological transition!

This process recovers components such as lithium, nickel and graphite from batteries, components that are often of great value. Through the company's innovative technological processes, 95% of the battery's components are recovered with a much higher degree of purity than traditional recycling methods.

So instead of trying to repurpose old car batteries, which often have a lower quality or durability, the company makes new ones out of existing battery materials. This kind of recycling is equally suitable for batteries that come from 100% electric cars as well as more conventional hybrid cars and plug-in hybrids.

Located in Anjou, the battery recycling plant can process roughly 4,000 batteries per year, with a 2,000-ton capacity commercial plant also slated to open in 2022. The company's goal is to establish a global network consisting of 20 facilities for even more efficient recovery of battery components.

Hyundai, the first car manufacturer to work with the company, is pioneering this approach, and is working to reduce the waste associated with batteries.

Hyundai is also an industry leader in producing a wide range of electric and hybrid vehicles. The carmaker now regularly sells electric vehicles of every size and for every taste, from popular Hyundai SUVs to the more compact, urban Hyundai sedans.

Two new models are expected to hit the market in the next two years, the electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 and new hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Hyundai Tucson. The IONIQ 5 is due in the fall of 2021 and will include, among other things, two electric powertrain options, including one with 215 horsepower, which is rumoured to have a driving range of over 400km

Meanwhile, the new versions of the popular Hyundai Tucson are scheduled for a 2022 unveiling and are expected to be bold, innovative and completely redesigned.

This is why the Korean manufacturer is constantly innovating, both with high-quality electric vehicles and new, greener partnerships. When you choose a Hyundai electric vehicle, not only are you opting for comfort and better performing new technologies, but you are also taking a giant leap toward a better future.

Hyundai's new collaboration with Recyclage Lithion guarantees the most efficient recuperation methods for the batteries in its vehicles. Find out more by visiting your local Hyundai dealer: there's no longer any reason to shy away from green energy!
